The following is an excerpt from my book "The Thrive Framework".
What are your values? Here's why I ask that question.
Early in my search for my purpose, I realised that a person’s purpose will be closely aligned to their values or value system.
Here’s why.
To do your best work, you need to be consistent.
To be consistent, you need to be passionate about the subject.
To be passionate about a subject, it needs to be a part of your core belief systems.
Your core values or value systems is how you perceive the world. It’s what drives you. Unless what you do is closely aligned to your value systems, you will be unable to do it wholeheartedly and consistently. And unless you can do something wholeheartedly and consistently you will never be the best at it in the world.
Your purpose is not something external that you have to find or achieve, but rather something internal that you have to discover and express. It is the essence of who you are and what you are meant to do. By knowing your core beliefs systems, you can identify your purpose that resonates with your true nature and values. Remembering your value systems is a shortcut to clearly defining a purpose that’s aligned with your core values. Another way of referring to your value system is your belief system.
Here are a few of my core value systems. It will help you reveal your core value systems.
I believe that humans were created in the image of God and that God created us to be more entrepreneurial than employable.
I believe that family is more important than work because while your work can replace you, your family cannot.
I believe that a billion-dollar company can bring about a billion-dollar headache.
I believe that entrepreneurship is more challenging than being an employee.
I believe it’s important for men to be the primary providers for their families.
I believe that every person possesses a unique talent and purpose.
I believe that modern employment can resemble modern slavery.
I believe that it's important to enjoy life before you get too old.
Your purpose is not a burden that you have to bear, but rather a gift that you have to share.
It is not a sacrifice that you have to make, but rather a contribution that you have to offer.
By knowing your core beliefs systems, you can fulfill your purpose with passion and joy, knowing that you are making a positive difference in the world and living a meaningful life.
